On Thursday, Oct. 11, the IDF destroyed its 15th Hamas tunnel – this one ran from Khan Younes in southern Gaza 200 meters into Israel. Like the last tunnel blown up in October 2017, this one was also a branch of an extensive network for assault. The IDF stated that the operation to take out this underground passage was delayed for “some months” and finally set for now in view of unexplained “operational considerations.”
It was described as serpentine with many connections and outfitted with electricity and telephone links. DEBKAfile’s military sources interpret the IDF communique’s citing of a delay of weeks and “operational considerations” as the cover for indirect Israeli negotiations with Hamas, mainly through Egypt and the UN mediator, to obtain an assurance that the destruction of the tunnel would not trigger a full-fledged missile attack on Israeli targets. Only after Hamas assented, did the operation go forward.
