THE MOST IMPORTANT AND MOST UNIVERSAL OF THE 10 COMMANDMENTS IS THE THIRD ONE

Badly translated as “Do not take the Name of the Lord in Vain”

Because the original really says two things that are generally not noted.

THE RIGHT TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION WOULD BE:

“DO NOT CARRY THE NAME OF GOD FOR YOUR OWN PURPOSES, BECAUSE TO DO SO IS THE ONE SIN FOR WHICH THERE IS NEVER FORGIVENESS”

Think about that for a moment.  A person can murder, commit adultery, fail to hero parents, steal the whole of Fort Knox, and still be forgiven, but if you claim to own and represent the authority of God, you will never find forgiveness.

Now look at history.  Tell me, what has been the worst atrocities ever committed by mankind and you will find that in almost every case,  it was done in the name of misused and misguided ideology.  Some of those religious ideologies,  and some not,  but note that some historians have labelled even Communism and Fascism as Christian heresies.

We look at the past and we see the horrors perpetrated by religious leaders who claimed to own universal truth, making those that dissent appear to be either stupid, deluded or evil for not conforming, spawning persecution and even massacres in the name of their God.  The Crusades, the Inquisition, the Muslim wars for conquest and the modern versions of Communist aggression and Nazi, fascist drives to control.

And some Islamic leaders today claim they are at war with the world, justifying terrorism, massacres, rapes, burning children alive, kidnapping and torture in the name of Allah.

A sin for which there will NEVER be forgiveness.

Things that lots of people did 1000 years go cannot be tolerated today.  But historically we have to be honest, that when “religions” were used claiming to be the will of God, a lot of horrible things happened. The problem is that Islam still does what everyone else decided was evil some time ago.
