WASHINGTON DC WAS CREATED TO BE AN INDEPENDENT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED DISTRICT SEPARATE FROM ANY OF THE STATES.
It was originally carved from lands that belonged to Maryland and Virginia, but the latter allocated land was withdrawn, leaving The District being made upon only of land taken from the state of Maryland.
Those arguing for Washington DC being a state, ignore both its origins and function. All they have their attention on, is the idea that they would have, as a state, two Senators and one to two Congressman.
They argue that Washington DC residents are disenfranchised when it comes to representation in the US House of Representatives and Senate, and therefore they are second class citizens.
But, there is no reason why residents of DC should not be, for Federal purposes, citizens of the State of Maryland, represented in Congress by Maryland’s Senators and Representatives.
That solves the problem.
In 2024, I expect the left to push hard for this because it will seem to be the last time they can do it before Trump or DeSantis is in the White House.
