During the appearance — which was part of a 2021 YDSA winter conference — Mamdani, then newly elected to the New York State Assembly, lamented that many socialist principles remain outside the political mainstream.
“Right now, if we’re talking about the cancellation of student debt, if we’re talking about Medicare for all, you know, these are issues which have the groundswell of popular support across this country,” Mamdani says in a video to conference goers. “But then there are also other issues that we firmly believe in, whether it’s BDS or whether it is the end goal of seizing the means of production, where we do not have the same level of support at this very moment.”

In January, Mamdani, a Muslim candidate who only recently became a citizen, tweeted that he was joining “Jummah prayers at the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge today.” The tweet showed him appearing to speak next to Imam Muhammad Al-Barr.

When asked on NBC if he thought billionaires have the right to exist, he chuckled.
“I don’t think that we should have billionaires,” he said, “because, frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality.”

Mamdani, a self-described Democratic socialist, came out swinging against capitalism during a television spot with CNN anchor Erin Burnett.
“Do you like capitalism?” Burnett asked the New York state assemblyman, who represents Queens.
“No, I have many critiques of capitalism,” Mamdani responded. “And I think ultimately the definition for me of why I call myself a democratic socialist is the words of Dr. King decades ago.”
“He said, call it democracy or call it democratic socialism, there must be a better distribution of wealth for all of God’s children in this country,” Mamdani said. “And that’s what I’m focused on is dignity, and taking on income inequality.”

Will he or won’t he… flip-flop when pressed on what his plan is for NYC Police. Here is his 2020 Tweet on X,

Mamdani has long criticized the New York Police Department (NYPD), calling for it to be defunded in 2020. He has also frequently called it “racist” and said the department’s Strategic Response Group should be disbanded.
“I am not running to defund the police,” Mamdani said while describing himself as
“a candidate who is not fixed in time, one that learns and one that leads, and part of that means admitting, as I have grown, and part of that means focusing on the people who deserve to be focused about.”
What does that quote even mean. Mamdani is very good at flip-flopping when held accountable to his previous statements.

- Do want to lose major to minor businesses across NYC? Who will leave when told they have increase taxes, must pay higher wages, must provide free services across NYC.
- Do you want to see lines to enter City owned grocery stores only to find the shelves are empty? City owned stores that will be city managed, located where city decides is the right location. City grocery stores have been “tried” and failed!
- Do you want to see Social Workers managing city crime? Defunding Police (sure he said he wouldn’t do that… but, he also said he would) will mean fewer Law Enforcement to call for 911 response. When Mamdani will surely be surrounding himself by Law Enforcement Security… but citizens be damned – Social workers will be available.
- Free “stuff”, yet someone has to pay for it! The “billionaires” will be OK to pay that, right? [sarcasm, in case you didn’t recognize it]. What billionaires? They will move their money and businesses out of NY. Gone! Repercussions: Loss of jobs, loss of city/state income, loss of community at levels never seen before. STUDY CUBA, VENEZUELA, MEXICO, and a few other Socialist/Communist countries.
- Do you want Zohran Mamdani to decide if YOU make too much money? Determine that you have to pay greater taxes because you worked hard to earn it… and others sat and waited for it to be handed to them?
